Road Heads

Dave, Matt, and Scott (the boys of Animosity Pierre) set off from New Jersey on a cross-country road trip that redefines the term "misadventure."

I loved this. This was a premise that could have been really boring, but the kept elevating the events that happened on the road so it didn’t cause me to lose interest. There are a lot of great details! I think specificity in your choices can make an all right sketch great. I loved the tape recorder. Washing the clothes on a wash board. The packing scene was great! The Snappersize sketch could almost be its own sketch, but it broke up the driving nicely. HA HA HA, who lives in that neighborhood. I love watching (and shooting films) in a car where you obviously are in the same place over and over. Bravo on wearing your group shirts. Its great marketing that is subtle in the sketch. This shows you are thinking on all levels of the sketch. Its my mantra…I think you could edit it down more…but really only by choosing what you could live with out joke wise. For example, you could cut one of the “bits” and it wouldn’t hurt the sketch. It’s a matter of sacrificing a funny bit for the overall sketch. You guys did a really great job. I liked this a lot.

THE GOOD Very nice intro, with a charming hobo. The structure is totally appropriate for the medium. You don’t dwell too long on most of the jokes, and a lot of them are really fun stuff I haven’t seen before. I got a real kick out of the packing, and out of the washboard. THE BAD Your characters could use some definition. It’s also very long. Remember that shorter and faster is almost always better when it comes to comedy. Most of all: if you’re asking people to watch for five minutes, it needs to be going somewhere. It was pretty consistently funny, but it might have worked better as eight 40-second interstitials than a five minute marathon.

THE GOOD Apparently these fellas travel in an old-timey, folksy world where five o’clock shadow symbolizes a hobo rather than the latest severe fashion statement from Milan. All this and a washboard, too. They’d be right at home in the classic cartoons of The New Yorker. Too bad they couldn’t manage to fit in a desert island with a castaway and a lone palm tree. True, the endless road trip is a perennial comedy concept, epitomized in Steven Wright’s joke: “My friend and I drove cross country. We only had one tape. I can’t remember what it was.” THE BAD However, the above joke is funnier than this clip, and requires far less of a time commitment. THE UGLY Why do ugly men love to get naked? Put it away, please!

I feel like i went on a roller coaster ride with this one. At times it was really funny, but in other parts i found myself wanting to fast forward. If you guys could have just made it a little simpler and worked on the editing, you would have reached a plateau of funny. But you didn't and that's sad. I liked the waffle thing, and i do like this one too, but that's just it. I like it. not really lovin it.

Actually if you had just slightly better equipment and production this would have been great. It needs to be a little tighter, the hard cuts are funny but on a low level just seem too amateurish. But the script is funny and you're all obviously into it, so good luck!

Alright, I'm done. Not always the funniest, but there's some good stuff and even better editing. I love the hobo part, but they should have taken the waffle maker on the road with them.
